Why sell gift cards
- They sell at the quiet times of the year for bookings: December, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day.
- The money comes in before the session, and the person who receives the card is a new client.
- Sold from your website, they take none of your time.
Setting them up
| What to decide | A common choice | |
|---|---|---|
| Amounts | Fixed amounts, a free amount, or both | Three fixed amounts and a free amount above a minimum |
| Validity | How long the card can be used | At least a year, longer where the law asks |
| Format | Sent by email, printed, or both | Both: some buyers want something to wrap |
| Use | A whole session, or money off any session | Money off, so the client chooses the design with you |
| Refunds | Whether an unused card can be refunded | Written on the card, before it is sold |
Redeeming them
Give each card a unique code and record its remaining balance after each payment. At checkout, check the code and the amount being used so the client knows what is left for another session.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gift card pay for a deposit?
Yes, if you allow it: it is money the client has already paid. Say so on the card or on your site.
How should I record gift cards in my books?
Usually as money received for a service still to be performed, until the card is used. Rules differ by country: ask your accountant how to treat sales tax or VAT on them.
